Health examination when working with asbestos

At Doctors Denmark, we offer health examinations for employees who work with asbestos - in full compliance with current regulations.

Why is an asbestos health check important?

Asbestos poses a serious health risk when the tiny fibers are inhaled. Over time, they can accumulate in the lungs and lead to asbestosis (scarring of the lung tissue), lung cancer or mesothelioma (cancer of the pleura). These diseases often develop slowly and can only be detected many years after exposure.

That's why an asbestos health survey is essential to detect early signs of disease and ensure that employees working with or around asbestos stay healthy. It also helps employers comply with legislation and create a safe and secure working environment.

New rules for working with asbestos

As of January 1, 2025, new rules came into force for working with asbestos. According to the legislation, employers must offer employees a health examination before starting work with asbestos and then repeat the examination at least every three years.

Even if the survey is voluntary for the employee, it must always be documented that the offer has been made so that the employer can comply with the rules.

At Lægerne Danmark, we follow the Danish Working Environment Authority's rules closely. Our goal is to ensure the health of employees while allowing companies to document statutory follow-up.

What does an asbestos health survey include?

An asbestos health assessment includes several important elements to ensure employee health and compliance with legal requirements:

Health assessment and conversation with a doctor

Assessment of the employee's general health and any symptoms.

Review of previous asbestos exposure

Mapping where and when the employee has been exposed to asbestos.

Advice on prevention and safety

Information on proper use of protective equipment and workflows to minimize risk.

Documentation of completed survey

Registration so that it can be documented that the employee has been offered the medical examination.

Asbestos record keeping and documentation

Employers are required to keep a register of employees who work with asbestos. The register must contain information about:

  • Employee tasks and exposure
  • Dates for medical examinations
  • Duration and extent of asbestos exposure

The aim is to track any health effects of asbestos and ensure that the company complies with legislation.
