Hepatitis A and B vaccination

Our travel vaccinations against hepatitis A and B can be given as separate vaccines or as a combined vaccine, depending on your needs and travel plans. We recommend planning your vaccination well in advance of your departure, as full protection may require more than one dose and a few weeks to develop.

Difference between hepatitis A and B

Cause

Hepatitis A

Caused by the Hepatitis A virus (HAV), which is primarily spread through ingestion of contaminated food or water.

Hepatitis B

Caused by the Hepatitis B virus (HBV), which is primarily spread through contact with infected blood, sexual contact, and from mother to child at birth.

Duration

Hepatitis A

Usually an acute and short-term illness.

Hepatitis B

Can develop into a chronic condition and lead to long-term health problems such as cirrhosis or liver cancer.

Vaccination

Hepatitis A

Vaccination is recommended for travelers to areas with a high incidence of HAV and in certain risk groups.

Hepatitis B

Vaccination is recommended for all infants as part of the routine vaccination program, healthcare workers, people at high risk of exposure through blood and body fluids, and travelers to areas with a high prevalence of HBV.

Prevention

Hepatitis A

Good hygiene and sanitation, including hand washing and safe handling of food and drink, are important preventive measures.

Hepatitis B

Safe sex, avoiding sharing needles and other equipment that can carry blood, and vaccination are important preventive measures.

Treatment

Hepatitis A

There is no specific treatment other than supportive care. The body is usually able to fight the virus on its own.

Hepatitis B

May include antiviral medications to reduce the risk of chronic disease and its complications. The need for treatment depends on the stage and severity of the disease.

By understanding these differences, you can better assess the risks and necessity of vaccinations before you travel.
