Scuba diving certificate

Last updated: July 27, 2026

A sports diving certificate is your health-related "diving license." It confirms that your heart, lungs, ears, and sinuses can withstand the pressure changes underwater, so you can dive safely – and it is often a requirement for diving courses and club trips. Book a brief health check with a diving-qualified doctor and get the certificate issued the same day.

What is a sports diving certificate?

A sports diving certificate is a medical statement that documents that your health meets the international standards (e.g., European Diving Technology Committee — EDTC) for recreational scuba diving. The certificate is often a requirement when you sign up for diving courses, renew your certificate, or participate in club trips where the organizer wants assurance that you can withstand pressure changes, cold, and physical exertion underwater.

The scuba diving certificate is accepted by educational organizations, insurers, and travel agencies worldwide and therefore serves as an admission ticket to both beginner courses, holiday dives, and advanced expeditions.

The certificate is based on international safety standards that protect the circulatory system, lung tissue, ear canals and other air-filled cavities from pressure-related damage. When a doctor has approved you, the risk of incidents such as decompression sickness, gas embolism and barotrauma is reduced, which benefits you, your partner and any rescuers.

The survey can consist of

The doctor's consultation itself follows a step-by-step protocol, which is adjusted according to age, experience and any symptoms.

  1. First, the doctor performs a thorough physical examination focusing on the heart, lungs, ears, and sinuses to ensure that your circulation and air-filled cavities can handle the pressure impact.
  2. Next, a urine sample is taken, which screens for sugar, protein, and signs of infection, which could indicate undiagnosed diseases or increase the risk during diving, among other things.
  3. Finally, a lung function test (spirometry) is performed if you are a smoker, have asthma symptoms, or have a history of lung disease; this test measures whether your airways are sufficiently clear for safe pressure equalization and gas exchange.

These three components together provide the doctor with a solid basis for making a reliable sports diving certificate.
