Why do women get cystitis more often?
Women are biologically more likely to get bladder infections than men. This is primarily due to differences in anatomy.
Shorter urethra – easier access for bacteria
Women's urethras are shorter and located closer to the rectum, which is where many of the bacteria that cause bladder infections come from – typically E. coli. This makes it easier for bacteria to move up into the bladder. At the same time, the urethra is close to both the vagina and anus, which increases the risk of bacteria spreading.
Certain life stages increase risk
Some periods in life further increase the risk – for example, during pregnancy, menopause, and after intercourse. During menopause, estrogen levels drop, which can change the environment in the vagina and make it harder to keep bacteria out. Pregnant women also experience changes in the urinary tract that can increase the risk.
Symptoms you should keep an eye on
Cystitis often comes on suddenly with clear symptoms. The sooner you react, the better.
The most common symptoms
- Burning or pain when urinating
- Frequent urge to urinate, also at night
- Dull sensation in the lower abdomen
- Feeling of not being able to empty the bladder completely
- Urine may be cloudy, smelly or with blood
Some also experience general discomfort, fatigue, or a slight fever. If you develop a high fever or pain in your sides, it could be a sign that the infection has spread to your kidneys. This requires prompt medical attention.
Good advice for everyday prevention
Although you cannot avoid all cases, there is much you can do to reduce the risk of cystitis.
Simple habits that make a difference
- Drink plenty of fluids – it helps to flush out the bladder and bacteria
- Pee when you feel the urge – and empty the bladder completely
- Wipe from front to back – so that bacteria are not carried forward towards the urethra
- Avoid sitting in damp swimwear for too long – heat and moisture are a good environment for bacteria.
- Use unscented intimate hygiene products – too much soap or perfume can irritate the mucous membranes
During intercourse, it is also recommended to pee afterwards to flush out any bacteria.
Recurrent bladder infections - why does it keep coming back?
Some women suffer from cystitis repeatedly. This can feel both frustrating and inhibiting.
Do you know the pattern?
If you experience an infection after each menstruation, every time you have had intercourse, or several times a year without explanation, you should contact a doctor. Repeated infections may require a more long-term strategy.
The doctor can, for example, investigate whether there are anatomical conditions, changes in hormones or other underlying causes. In some cases, preventive antibiotics or local estrogen treatment may be an option.
When should you contact a doctor?
It is important not to ignore symptoms, even if you think they will “go away on their own”.
Seek medical attention if:
- You have symptoms for more than two days without improvement
- You develop a fever or chills
- You are pregnant
- You have repeated infections
- You experience pain in your lower back or around your kidneys

What about cranberries and other natural remedies?
Cranberry products are popular, and many women swear by them as a preventive measure. However, the research is not conclusive.
What does the science say?
Studies show that cranberry capsules can reduce the risk of infection, especially in women with recurrent cases. The active substances are believed to make it harder for bacteria to attach to the bladder wall.
Other natural supplements, such as lactic acid bacteria and D-mannose, are also mentioned as possible preventive measures. Although the effect is not guaranteed, it may be worth trying in consultation with your doctor - especially if you want to avoid antibiotics.
