Children's immune system - why childhood diseases actually strengthen the body

October 20, 2025

When your child gets sick, it can seem worrying, but many childhood illnesses actually help build a strong immune system.

Why illness is a natural part of growing up

When children start daycare or school, many parents find that their child suddenly gets sick again and again. It may seem frustrating, but it's actually quite normal. In the early years, a child's body encounters a wide range of new bacteria and viruses, and every time the immune system fights one of them, it gets stronger.

The immune system acts as the body's own defense system, learning from each "fight" against disease. Each infection helps the body to recognize future threats more quickly, which means the child gradually becomes more resilient.

The immune system - the body's learning system

A child's immune system is not fully developed at birth. Rather, it needs to be "trained" through contact with different microorganisms.

The innate and the learned immune system

The innate immune system responds quickly, but non-specifically, to foreign substances. The learned immune system, on the other hand, learns to recognize specific viruses and bacteria and remembers them for next time. Therefore, an infection in childhood will often allow the body to fight the same disease much more effectively later in life.

Children's common diseases and why they are rarely dangerous

Colds, otitis media, strep throat and stomach infections are among the most common childhood illnesses. Although it can feel overwhelming when your child is sick for the third time in a month, it's usually harmless.

These infections help the body develop antibodies that protect against future illnesses. In the vast majority of cases, the illnesses resolve on their own and the child quickly returns to normal energy and appetite.

When should you contact the doctor?

Although many diseases are harmless, there are situations where you should seek medical attention.

Seek medical attention if

  • Your child has a high fever for several days
  • There are signs of breathing difficulties
  • Child seems lethargic or unusually tired
  • Rash, neck stiffness or persistent vomiting occurs

At Doctors Denmark, you can always get fast access to an experienced doctor - often the same day. We take your concerns seriously and ensure you get the right assessment and peace of mind.

How to best support your child's immune system

A strong immune system is built up over time, but you as a parent can do a lot to support it. Ensure a varied diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats. Sleep and fresh air are also important factors for a well-functioning immune system.

In addition, children should be allowed to play outside, get dirty and be active - this strengthens both the body and the immune system. Excessive cleaning and use of antibacterial products can actually have the opposite effect because the body has fewer natural challenges to learn from.

Vaccinations - an important supplement

Although natural infections strengthen the immune system, some diseases are too serious for the body to "practice" on them. This is where vaccinations come in.

Vaccines help the body create antibodies without the child having to go through the disease itself. This means that the child gets the same protection - just without the risk of complications. The Danish childhood vaccination program is carefully designed to protect against the most serious infections.

Illness and well-being - make room for calm and presence

When children are sick, they need rest, fluids and loving care. It's a good idea to leave your child at home to give their body time to recover - and to avoid infecting others.

As a parent, you can do a lot just by being present, providing reassurance and helping your child rest. Most children recover quickly and their immune systems are stronger afterwards.
