High pollen count
The pollen count indicates how much pollen is in the air, which is of great importance to you if you have a pollen allergy. The higher the count, the more strained your airways and eyes may become.
The pollen count varies depending on the season and the weather. Typically, it peaks in the spring and summer when trees, grass, and weeds are in bloom. If you are sensitive to pollen, you may already experience discomfort in March and all the way through September.
What is pollen?
Pollen are small, microscopic grains of dust that plants emit to reproduce. When trees, grass, and weeds bloom, large amounts of pollen are released and spread by the wind.
For most people, pollen is completely harmless – but if you have pollen allergy, your immune system reacts as if it were a threat. This triggers an allergic reaction that can cause symptoms in the nose, eyes, and airways.
The most common symptoms
Hay fever is one of the most common reactions to pollen. The symptoms can vary from person to person - but there are some typical signs.
Signs of pollen allergy
- Itchy or watery eyes
- Blocked or runny nose
- Sneezing and coughing
- Fatigue and difficulty concentrating
If you experience these symptoms every year at the same time, it may be a sign of an allergy, which we can help you clarify and treat.
When is the pollen count highest?
It depends on the type of pollen. In Denmark, we typically see three main periods with high pollen counts:
- Spring: Tree pollen from e.g. elm, birch and hazel
- Summer: Grass pollen – one of the most bothersome
- Late summer: Weed pollen, especially mugwort
Wind is also important - windy weather can spread pollen over long distances, while rain can "wash the air clean" for a while.

These small adjustments in everyday life can make a big difference in how much pollen you are exposed to.
