Hormonal contraception – how does it work?

Hormonal contraception protects against pregnancy by affecting your body's natural hormones. Examples include birth control pills, birth control patches, birth control rings, birth control injections, and hormonal IUDs. What they all have in common is that they either inhibit ovulation, thicken the mucus in the cervix, or affect the lining of the uterus to prevent pregnancy.

Many people find that hormonal contraception can also regulate menstruation and reduce menstrual pain. For some, this provides greater freedom and fewer discomforts in everyday life. For others, however, the hormonal effects can cause side effects that influence their choice.

It is important to remember that your body reacts individually. What works well for one person is not necessarily right for another. That is why we always start with you and your situation.

Common side effects of hormonal contraception

The most common side effects are nausea, headaches, breast tenderness, and spotting. Some women also experience mood swings or changes in sex drive. These symptoms are often mild and disappear within the first few months.

For some individuals, the side effects may be more bothersome and affect their quality of life. These may include persistent mood swings or migraines. In rare cases, there may be an increased risk of blood clots, especially if you smoke or have certain risk factors.

If you experience discomfort, it is important not to simply stop treatment without seeking advice. We can often adjust the type or dosage to find a solution that suits you better.

Hormone-free contraception – an alternative?

If you want to avoid hormones, there are several options available. The best known is the copper IUD, which protects without affecting your hormone balance. In addition, there are barrier methods such as condoms and diaphragms.

Hormone-free contraception can be a good choice if you have previously experienced unpleasant side effects from hormones. However, some women experience heavier or more painful periods with copper IUDs. It is therefore important to weigh up the pros and cons.

The choice is not only about efficiency, but also about how you feel in your body. Together, we will find the solution that gives you the most peace of mind.

Your age and life situation play a role

Young and first-time voter

If you are young and choosing contraception for the first time, it can feel overwhelming. In this case, it can be nice to have a solution that is easy to use and easy to stop again. Birth control pills or mini-pills are often a good place to start, but it always depends on your health and your needs.

After pregnancy or in your 30s and 40s

If you have given birth or are in a different phase of life, your needs may change. You may want a long-term solution such as an IUD. In your 40s, there may also be special considerations in relation to smoking, blood pressure, and the risk of blood clots.

Your life situation, your plans for the future, and your general health are key factors in choosing contraception.

Illnesses and medications can influence the choice

Certain medical conditions may affect which form of contraception is safe for you. If you suffer from migraine with aura, high blood pressure, or have previously had a blood clot, some hormonal methods may not be recommended.

In addition, certain types of medication can reduce the effectiveness of hormonal contraception. This includes some types of epilepsy medication and herbal remedies containing St. John's wort. It is therefore important that we discuss your overall health and any treatments you may be receiving.
