How to Care for Your Skin After Mole Removal

Get helpful tips on how to care for your skin and promote healing after having a mole removed.

Mole check

The first few days after the mole is removed

Once a mole has been removed, the skin begins to heal immediately. The first few days are particularly important because the skin is vulnerable and needs time to heal properly. It is therefore important that you follow the advice given to you by your doctor.

You will often have a small bandage or a band-aid over the area. This protects the wound from bacteria and dirt, while helping the skin heal in a stable environment. Be sure to keep the area clean and dry, and avoid touching the wound unnecessarily.

It is normal to experience mild tenderness, redness, or swelling at first. These symptoms are part of the body’s natural healing process and will typically subside within a few days.

Keep the wound clean and dry

Good wound care is an important part of the healing process. By keeping the wound clean, you reduce the risk of infection and provide the skin with the best conditions for healing itself.

Always wash your hands before touching the area or changing the bandage. If your doctor has recommended cleaning the wound, you can usually do so with lukewarm water or mild soap. Then gently pat the area dry with a clean towel.

Avoid scrubbing or rubbing the skin around the wound. This can irritate the skin and delay healing. A clean bandage or a new dressing can then be applied as needed.

Avoid picking at the wound

As the skin heals, a small scab may form over the wound. This is a natural part of the healing process, and it’s important that you let it stay in place.

If you pick at the scab, you risk reopening the wound. This can both delay healing and increase the risk of infection or scarring. Although it may be tempting, it’s best to let the skin do its job.

If the area itches, it may be a sign that the skin is healing. Instead, try keeping the area moisturized or covered with a bandage if it bothers you.

Protect your skin from the sun

Sun protection is important for the scar

After having a mole removed, the skin is extra sensitive to sunlight. UV rays can interfere with the healing process and increase the risk of the scar becoming darker or more visible.

That’s why it’s a good idea to protect the area from the sun for several months after the treatment. You can do this by covering the area with clothing or a bandage, or by using sunscreen with a high SPF.

Especially during the summer, you should make sure to protect your skin properly. Sun protection not only aids the healing process but can also lead to better-looking results in the long run.

Be on the lookout for signs of infection

Although most wounds heal without any problems, it’s important to watch for signs of infection. These can include, for example, increasing redness, warmth in the skin, or pain that gets worse instead of better.

Other signs may include swelling, pus from the wound, or a fever. If you experience any of these symptoms, you should contact your doctor to have the area examined.

The earlier an infection is treated, the easier it is usually to manage. That’s why it’s a good idea to take action if something seems different than expected.

When can you return to your normal activities?

Most people can quickly return to their normal daily routine after having a mole removed. Minor procedures rarely require an extended break from work or daily activities.

However, it may be best to avoid strenuous physical activity for the first few days, especially if the wound is in an area where the skin is stretched a lot. This could be on the back, shoulders, or legs, for example.

If you have had stitches, the doctor will usually tell you when they need to be removed. Until then, it’s important to take extra good care of the area.

How to reduce the risk of scarring

Give your skin time to heal

A small scar may be a natural part of the process when a mole is removed. Fortunately, many scars will become less visible over time, especially if the skin is given the right conditions to heal.

Avoid tightening the skin around the wound, and follow your doctor’s advice on wound care. Once the wound has completely healed, you may in some cases use moisturizer or scar care products, if recommended.

The most important thing is patience. Skin healing takes time, and the final result can only be assessed after several months.

When should you see a dermatologist?

There may be situations where it is a good idea to have the wound re-evaluated. If you experience persistent pain, severe redness, or if the wound does not appear to be healing, you should contact us.

This also applies if a new mole changes shape, color, or size. It’s always better to have your skin checked once too often than once too little.

At Lægerne Danmark, you can quickly get your skin evaluated and receive advice on the right treatment. This provides peace of mind if you’re unsure about how your skin is healing.
