Lead blood test

Professionally updated: March 4, 2025

Lead is a heavy metal that cannot be excreted by the body and therefore accumulates and can poison the blood, bone marrow, and potentially damage the nervous system. There are guidelines for periodic measurement of lead in the blood for people who work in conditions where they are exposed to lead risk – further information can be found in relevant places.

The risk of lead poisoning

The risk of lead poisoning is not limited to the workplace. Lead can also be found in the air or water in certain areas. During renovation, you may encounter old paint that contains lead, and hunters still use ammunition with lead. Hobbies such as glass and jewellery making, as well as glazing ceramics, can also lead to exposure to lead. Additionally, older toys may contain lead. For these reasons, blood tests to measure lead levels may also be relevant for private individuals.
